About us

Reggio Children, International Centre for the defence and promotion of the rights and potential of all children, was founded on 11 March 1994 with the aim of giving value and strength to the work of Reggio Emilia's municipal infant-toddler centres and preschools, a pedagogical approach known around the world as the Reggio Emilia Approach®.

OBJECTIVES

  • to spread a strong idea of childhood, of the rights, potentials and resources;
  • to promote study, research, and experimentation around the themes of education giving priority to active, constructive and creative learning by children;
  • to define more advanced professionalism and culture in general for people operating in childhood and family services, through the creation of professional development initiatives for work;
  • to give value to the themes of research, documentation, and the interpretation of children’s processes of learning and of knowledge construction;
  • to encourage the value of documentation of children’s and teachers’ work using all the techniques of multimedia, especially the processes in the formation of ideas, hypotheses and theories by children while engaged in various areas of knowledge and experience.

ACTIVITIES

Reggio Children promotes and experiments with quality education, diffusing it around the world in activities of on-line and in-person professional learning, publishing, exhibitions, ateliers, consulting and research.

Reggio Emilia's education experience has built up dialogue and exchange with more than 130 countries and territories: with some of these Reggio Children has created an International Network, that collaborates with diffusing the Reggio Emilia Approach® in the world. THE REGGIO EMILIA APPROACH SYSTEM

Reggio Children, Preschools and Infant-toddler Centres – Istituzione of the Municipality of Reggio Emilia and Fondazione Reggio Children - Centro Loris Malaguzzi are together the Reggio Emilia Approach system.

The long history of the Reggio Emilia Approach® has origins in the late nineteenth century, and saw several significant moments in the course of many years of development. Discover the timeline here.

A central figure in this history was Loris Malaguzzi who, together with the comune or municipality, many local administrators and citizens, women in particular, contributed to the birth and construction of a network of municipal preschools and infant-toddler centres in Reggio Emilia.
