Investigating through drawing

AT HOME WITH THE REGGIO APPROACH

PLAYING TOGETHER AT HOME

by Preschools and Infant-toddler centres – Istituzione of the Municipality Reggio Emilia, and Reggio Children

This game is based on the capacity of our imagination to anticipate what might happen next: in Italian we call this “prefiguration”.

In the game our drawings transform into a sort of “treasure chest” that everyone’s curious to open because no one knows what’s inside. “Opening” the drawing and seeing the content creates surprise and laughter.

SOME SUGGESTIONS FOR CHILDREN

Take a sheet of A4 paper (about 21x30 cm) or larger, place it horizontally, and fold both sides over towards the centre leaving a part in the middle uncovered.

Draw any subject you like, covering the whole sheet of paper, including the parts folded over.

FIGURA 1

When you open the folded sides so the paper is flat, you will only see the middle part of the drawing. Now using that as a starting point, draw another subject or figure.

The game becomes more difficult when the central part of the drawing is more complex.

secondo esempio

Five and six-year olds can challenge adults and older friends to this game: it isn’t simple but we put our trust in them because we’ve seen children come out victorious so often.

And, no one will be too surprised if the children turn out to be much cleverer than lots of adults!
