A fantastic binomial

Gianni Rodari and Reggio Emilia

An exhibition about the encounter between Gianni Rodari and Reggio Emilia which generated The Grammar of Fantasy

The encounter between Gianni Rodari and the city of Reggio Emilia is one of the “fantastic binomials,” in Rodari’s spirit, which generated The Grammar of Fantasy, the summa of the poet and writer’s thought, the result of decades of reflections but also a window wide open to the future.

Over the years, Gianni Rodari and Loris Malaguzzi, each following his own path, were able to change the way adults looked at the world of childhood. Rodari himself explained this convergence of thought: in introducing The Grammar of Fantasy, he spoke of “an offering of tools to help create a new role for the child at school, the child as creator, producer, researcher”.

Words that resonate in this city, where schools are places for experimentation and democratic invention thanks to Loris Malaguzzi and the men and women – administrators, pedagogistas, teachers – who never doubted that childhood should be at the centre of the polis, the city.

The exhibition revisits some of Rodari’s themes – fantastic hypotheses, the art of inventing stories, the fantastic binomial, puppets and marionettes, fantasy and logical thinking... – made visible in a small selection of the many experiences carried out in the infant-toddler centres and municipal preschools of Reggio Emilia from the 1970s to the present.

In celebrating the work and thought of Gianni Rodari, this exhibition aims to support the importance of education to creativity and imagination, qualities that all human beings are endowed with and which represent extraordinary democratic tools for imagining and realizing the future, today as in the past.
